Described as 'foot sox' when shown with other historic hosiery by J R Allen at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and the International Exhibition of 1862. They probably fulfilled a triple function of protecting fine stockings from shoes, warmth and of absorption during games or strenuous pursuits.
